The Voronezh Variations 5
Osip Mandelstam

for Veronika Bowker

Thieving magpie, Voronezh, black and sharp as night.
Will you drop your loot or pick it up and punish
your son with it, as a raven or magpie might,
you who are only a joke yourself, Voronezh?

Alternatively: Crow, the Crow's bright blade.
Will you crow now Voronezh, now I have gone...?
Will you drop me or gather me in your masquerade,
crow, joker, with your sharp beak of black crow-shade.

The Voronezh Variations 3
Osip Mandelstam

for Veronika Bowker

Ravensditch, Ravensbruck, Ravensbeak,
Let me go, let me come, or else you will seek
me in vain, Voronezh, having dropped my life
on a whim, raven whose beak is sharp as a knife...

The Voronezh Variations 2
Osip Mandelstam

for Veronika Bowker

Vóron, a raven, nozh: a snitch: ditched by
Voronezh, like unstitched leaves, reached by
Voronezh, rehitched, stitched up by the bitch
Voronozh, the raven with the snitch.

The Voronezh Variations 1
Osip Mandelstam

for Veronika Bowker

Raven: vóron; nozh: blade, winds me out, re-winds me:
The blade must fall, the raven’s free yet binds me.
Returns, re-venues, misses me and finds me,
Vorónezh, ravensblade whose whim defines me.

Ballade van de Traagheid
Herman De Coninck

hetzelfde is.

The Ballad of Slowness
Herman De Coninck

I love the slowness of lying on grass, like a king:
me, looking out and surveying my adherents,
my extremities, telling my left arm:
you there, convey my hand to my mouth
that I might yawn, that's right,
and now lie down again, excellent,
I must have discipline.

I love the slowness of being,
Zen, they say in the East, I believe
it's the same thing.
I love the slowness of lying in bed,
you next to me, with your knees behind
my knees, like double S, the slowness with which
you haven't told me yet that you're awake,
your responsiveness consisting of lips,
the slowness with which I come faster and faster,
the calmness with which I grow wilder and wilder,
the slowness of your diplomatic body
that gives and takes, your corps diplomatique,

and the slowness of a cigar afterwards,
the slowness of grandeur, the slowness of someone
smashing his car into a tree in slow
motion, the majesty of explosion, solemn,
solemnly ends this life.

Bonte Abeelen
Guido Gezelle

Wit als watte, en teenegader
groen, is 't bonte abeelgeblader.

Wakker, als een wekkerspel
wikkelwakkelwaait het snel.

Groen vanboven is 't en, zonder
minke, wit als melk, vanonder.

Onstandvastig volg het, gansch,
't onstandvastig windgedans.

Wisselbeurtig, op en neder,
slaat het, als een' vogelveder.

Wit en grauw, zoo, dóór de lucht,
"bonte-abeelt" de duivenvlucht.

The Aspen Tree
Guido Gezelle

White and green together heaves
The aspen all its glancing leaves.

Ever awake, like a ticking clock,
To and fro its branches rock.

From above, it is all a shimmer of green,
And milk-white when from below it is seen.

Most unpeaceable of tree,
It dances with the fitful breeze.

Up and down in windy weather
Wave its leaves, like a bird's feather.

White and grey it gleams in the night,
Like a flock of doves in flight.

Translated by Jethro Bithell
