The Prophet
Alexander Pushkin

Tormented by spiritual thirst,
I dragged myself through a somber desert.
And a six-winged seraph
Appeared to me at the crossing of the ways.
He touched my eyes
with fingers as light as a dream:
And my prophetic eyes opened
Like those of a frightened eagle.
He touched my ears
And they were filled with noise and ringing:
And I heard the shuddering of the heavens,
And the flight of the angels in the heights,
And the movement of the beasts of the waters,
And the sound of the vine growing in the valley.
He bent down to my mouth
And tore out my tongue,
Sinful, deceitful, and given to idle talk;
And with his right hand steeped in blood
He inserted the forked tongue of a wise serpent
Into my benumbed mouth.
He clove my breast with a sword
And plucked out my quivering heart,
And thrust a flaming coal
Into my gaping breast.
Like a corpse I lay in the desert.
And the voice of God called out to me:
Arise, O prophet, see and hear,
Be filled with my will.
Go forth over land and sea
And set the hearts of men on fire with your Word.

De buigzaamheid van het verdriet
Hans Lodeizen

boven mijn hoofd en even
voelde ik een vis langs mij strijken
in de stille zee.

dag zei ik tegen haar dag kom
ik je nog eens tegen, glimlachend
maar die wind blies weg
haar gezicht in het water
en ik knikte en ik werd onzichtbaar
in het stille leven.

Het Onzichtbare Labyrint
Gerrit Komrij

Woestijnen scheppen, in hun fel verlangen

How surely gravity's law

Rainer Maria Rilke

How surely gravity's law,

strong as an ocean current,
takes hold of the smallest thing
and pulls it toward the heart of the world.

Each thing—

each stone, blossom, child—
is held in place.
Only we, in our arrogance,
push out beyond what we each belong to
for some empty freedom.

If we surrendered

to earth's intelligence
we could rise up rooted, like trees.

Instead we entangle ourselves

in knots of our own making
and struggle, lonely and confused.

So like children, we begin again

to learn from the things,
because they are in God's heart;
they have never left him.

This is what the things can teach us:

to fall,
patiently to trust our heaviness.
Even a bird has to do that
before he can fly.

Over het verlangen naar een sigaret
Rutger Kopland

in mijn hoofd moest herhalen:

Lorelei
Heinrich Heine

Ich weiss nicht, was soll es bedeuten,

Dass ich so traurig bin;
Ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

Die Luft ist kühl, und es dunkelt,

Und ruhig fliesst der Rhein;
Der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
Im Abendsonnenschein .

Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet

Dort oben wunderbar,
Ihr goldnes Geschmeide blitzet,
Sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme

Und singt ein Lied dabei;
Das hat eine wundersame,
Gewaltige Melodei.

Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe

Ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
Er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
Er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh!

Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen

Am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
Und das hat mit ihrem Singen
Die Lorelei getan.

Heinrich Heine

I canna tell what has come ower me

   That I am sae eerie and wae;
An auld-warld tale comes before me,
It haunts me by nicht and by day.

From the cool lift the gloamin' draps dimmer,

   And the Rhine slips saftly by;
The taps of the mountains shimmer
I' the lowe o' the sunset sky.

Up there, in a glamor entrancin',

   Sits a maiden wondrous fair;
Her gowden adornments are glancing,
She is kaimin' her gowden hair.

As she kaims it the gowd kaim glistens,

That while she is singin' a song
That hauds the rapt soul that listens,
With its melody sweet and strong.

The boy, floating by in vague wonder,

   Is seized with a wild weird love;
He sees na the black rocks under,—
He sees but the vision above.

The water their waves are flingin'

   Ower boatie and boatman anon;
And this, with her airtful singin',
   The Waterwitch Lurley hath done.
